Funding approved to prevent homelessness by Scottish Government

Insight

There is no doubt that the pandemic has had a huge financial effect on both landlords and tenants with loss of income making payment of rent almost impossible for a lot of people. With tenants relying on income to pay their rent and landlords’ source of income being the rent from their tenants.

The Scottish Government have allocated a sum of £10million to be awarded to Local Authorities in an attempt to prevent homelessness as a result of tenants being evicted on the grounds of rent arrears.

Housing Secretary, Shona Robinson advises that the grants will assist in situations where both landlord and tenant are willing to work together in addressing rent arrears and agreeing a payment plan to prevent the requirement for eviction.

There will be no formal application process in terms of this grant – each Local Authority will assess each case on its own merit.

Landlords and tenants are being encouraged to seek advice on the level of support available to them.
