Consultation - Road safety in Scotland
INSIGHTS
The Scottish Government is undertaking a National Speed Management Review to consider the effect of reducing speed limits on Scotland’s road network. One of the aims of the consultation is to ensure that speed limits are appropriate with a view to reducing the number of injuries and deaths on Scotland’s roads.
The government opened its consultation in November 2024 and invites feedback on proposals to reduce the national speed limit on single carriageway roads from 60mph to 50mph and to increase the speed limit for goods vehicles exceeding 7.5 tonnes on single carriageways from 40mph to 50mph and on dual carriageways from 50mph to 60mph.
The Scottish Government’s ambition is to make Scotland’s roads the safest in the world by 2030.
Responses to the consultation can be made here.
According to figures gathered by Police Scotland and collated by Transport Scotland, thousands of people are seriously injured or killed on Scotland’s roads every year, with the figure increasing year-on-year.
When announcing the consultation, Transport Secretary, Fiona Hyslop said: “We must never lose sight of the fact that one death on our roads is one too many.
“These proposed changes represent a vital step towards achieving national casualty reduction targets, and I urge everyone to take part in the consultation and help shape the future of road safety in Scotland.”
The consultation runs until 5 March 2025.
