The latest statistics from LINC Scotland show a promising start to the year for investment levels in Scotland. The article notes that angel investment worth £70.2m was made in the first half of 2021, compared to £74.4m for the whole of 2020.
This mirrors exactly what our Corporate team is seeing at Harper Macleod in terms of investment figures rising. Since January 2021, we have advised and supported companies and investors in relation to more than £28m worth of investment.
These rising figures show the resilience of Scotland’s entrepreneurs, and the large rise in the number of non-Scottish based investors looking to invest in Scottish companies that we have witnessed demonstrates the reach that Scottish businesses are having across the globe.
As LINC note in their findings, the tech sector is still booming and shows no intention of slowing down. Investment in tech businesses accounted for 2/3 of all investments carried out by our Corporate team in 2020/2021.
The life science sector is a close second demonstrating the more “mindful” investor and the importance of “impact” investing. Investors are now seeking investment with purpose which the life science sector often provides. More and more we are meeting businesses with a social conscience who no longer have the sole objective of profit and instead focus on “ESG” (environmental, social, governance). We expect this trend to continue and become even more prominent in 2022.
All in all, this is great news for Scottish high growth businesses!
