Insight

A recent report by the Offshore Wind Industry Council (OWIC) suggests the number of people working in Scotland’s offshore wind industry is set to surge to nearly 100,000 by 2030 – driven mainly by ScotWind, the major leasing round by Crown Estate Scotland. The sector currently employs around 31,000 people

The report also suggests the sector is likely to see around £155bn worth of private investment over the next 10 years.

Increased investment, job creation and technological innovation can only be welcomed.

There is a major opportunity for Scotland to benefit from this growth and investment, not least in our ports and harbours, but the communities and supply chains which support the related industries.

This is something we’ll be exploring as part of our Scottish Highland Renewable Energy Conference on 23 June. We’re looking forward to hearing from Ian Cormack, harbour master at Wick Harbour Authority, and Alan Paul, control room team lead at Beatrice Offshore Windfarm.

People, skills and recruitment challenges were also a hot topic at our recent Marine Economy Week event, and you can watch the video here featuring employment partner Ewan Stafford, and immigration lawyer Ashley Fleming, as they speak with Angus Ferguson from Onboard Maritime and Martin Leyland from Shetland Seafood Auctions Limited.
