Green Freeports – An empowered opportunity
Read our report on Green Freeports
During Harper Macleod’s third annual Marine Economy Week, we published a report into Scotland’s two new Green Freeports in the Forth, and Inverness and the Cromarty Firth.
These two new trading zones are being created to enhance investment, jobs and regeneration, and will be key assets in Scotland’s marine economy. Our report looks at the work that’s been done so far, and the impact these Green Freeports could have in the future.
This report has been produced following two roundtable events with stakeholder representatives who covered a wide spectrum of interests, including local authorities, development agencies, business groups, infrastructure providers, skills development and other professional advisors, as well as representatives from each of the Green Freeports themselves. Thank you to our attendees for their time and insights.
The discussions were constructive and wide-ranging, spanning issues such as public and private sector collaboration, international investment, skills, local infrastructure provision and the transformative potential both zones can deliver for their respective communities.
Scotland’s natural capital – an investment for the future
Read our report on the future of Scotland’s natural capital
Scotland’s natural capital – our air, water, soil, flora and fauna – is estimated to be worth £230bn. These elements help us to produce the goods and services which are essential to our society and economy.
In recent years, the focus within the natural capital sphere has been on the reduction of carbon emissions, leading to carbon offsetting through the purchase of carbon credits generated by natural capital projects. In the UK, these projects are primarily peatland restoration and woodland creation.
We recently held two discussion-led events on the future of Scotland’s natural capital, focusing on peatland and woodland. We brought together land owners, developers, policy makers, funders, representative bodies and professional advisors.
Our report looks to cover as much of the discussion as possible, appreciating the fact there are both harmonious and conflicting views.
Watch our short video of a visit we made to a peatland restoration project on the Wyvis Estate, north of Inverness, discussing the future of Scotland’s natural capital.
